Why doesn’t Virgin Voyages offer a drinks package?

Virgin did a lot of research with Sailors to understand what was important to them in terms of inclusions, to create high quality, high value & experience. Most people are looking for an excellent, yet reasonably priced selection of cocktails, wine, and beer. They don’t want to pay inflated prices designed to support all-inclusive alcohol or unlimited package options. People don’t want their money going towards subsidising the drinking habits of others through higher price tags associated with all-encompassing packages or alcohol options either. Instead, they are looking for quality drinks at sensible rates without feeling a “sticker shock” every time they buy one. We’ve all seen those people at the bar in an all-inclusive hotel getting drunk all day just because it’s “free” (nothing is free, you’ve paid for it somewhere).

They also found it was unfair to make everyone in same cabin purchase the same drinks package which is quite common with other cruise lines. If you have someone who is tee-total, they’re forced to have an all-inclusive drinks package because their partner wants one.

What drinks are included on a Virgin Voyage?

Compared to a lot of other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages offers a great range of basic drinks all part of your cruise. Soda, still & sparkling water are all included which you’d usually need to buy a soft drinks package on most other cruise lines. It’s great that you don’t have to pay extra to stay hydrated – your skin will thank you too!

Does that mean drinks are expensive onboard?

Virgin have priced their drinks around the same or lower than going to a decent bar or restaurant in somewhere like New York, Paris or London. Around $5-6 for a beer, $9-11 for a cocktail and nearly half their wines are under $10 for a glass.

Do I have to pay tips on top for my drinks too?

One of our favourite things about Virgin (and there’s a lot to choose from) is there are no tips or gratuities to subsidise the wages of the crew. Virgin pay them a decent living wage so there’s no need or expectation to tip. This means that a drink that’s $8, is actually $8 without an 18% service charge on top. Depending on where you’re sailing, there may be a local tax to pay on top though.
